English
Today we looked at two spoken word poems on technology. There are many different spoken words online, about a variety of other topics. Please spend some time looking through existing spoken word texts for something that is interesting to you. Choose one spoken word poem and listen/ read/ watch it a few times. Choose one that leaves an impression, as you’ll need to write a bit about it.
Some Suggestions:
“A Million Pieces” (Jon Jorgenson)
This is about how we can find beauty and strength in our challenges and obstacles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLUIyXmm3TU
“Repetition” (Phil Kaye)
Kaye cleverly and ironically uses repetition to discusses his emotions as he struggles to come to terms with his parent’s divorce. Could be sensitive to some audiences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KI6c_IfvHg
“What Kind of Asian Are You?” (Alex Dang)
A semi-humorous discussion on racism, as experienced by an Asian-American teen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoP0ox_Jw_w&t=13s
“An Ode to the Millennial Generation” (Suli Breaks)
A poem for millennials, particularly directed at adults who don’t understand their values, ways of thinking, and pastimes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoUkqNvZQeM
None of these sound interesting? You can search up your own. In general, Get Lit – Words Ignite and Button Poetry have a wide selection. I only ask that we keep this G rated and refrain from using poems with profanity (swearing) or other PG-13 material. Please and thank you.
